Pfizer Canada is the Canadian operation
of New York-based Pfizer Inc, the world's largest pharmaceutical
company. Pfizer's mission is to discover and develop innovative
medicines and other products which improve the quality of
life of people and animals around the world. Pfizer
was founded in 1849 by German cousins Charles Pfizer and
Charles Erhart who emigrated to the U.S. from Germany in
1848. Initially established as a small "fine chemicals"
factory in Brooklyn , New York , Pfizer specialized in producing
high-quality chemicals which were supplied to the food industry
and fledgling pharmaceutical businesses. Pfizer's direct
activities in pharmaceuticals began during the Second World
War when it used its chemical expertise to become a pioneer
in the mass production of the "miracle drug" penicillin,
the first shipments of which were sent to Allied troops
for the D-Day invasion in 1944. Following the war, the company
continued its research into antibiotics and their production,
resulting in the development in the early 1950s of the antibiotic
Terramycin. Through the rest of the century, Pfizer developed
and marketed many more innovative medicines in numerous
therapeutic areas (i.e. arthritis, cardiovascular diseases,
infectious disease, mental healthy, etc.) |
